What is setting in volleyball?
A set is an overhand contact of the ball, usually the second contact in a rally, made after a pass in serve receive or after a dig in defense to redirect the ball to a hitter in the front row or back row by a setter to run the team's offense.
Wall passing and setting drills volleyball players do in my trainings can be done daily at home with a goal of at least 250 - 500 reps of various drills to keep your passing or setting technique, angled platform work, ball contacting skills and control of the ball.....extremely sharp!
Most of you know what is setting in volleyball if you've gotten to this page.
Here are some volleyball drills for you that you can do at home or in practice with a friend or teammate you are working out with at home or on their own or even during an open gym at your school.
Watch as Kenny and Jaylen work on controlling the ball to a consistent spot on the wall and then control the ball to themselves, then finally they control the ball to each other...repeatedly.
Pick a brick, a specific spot on the wall or mark a big X in chalk on a wall or use a basketball net or backboard ...no matter what... anybody walking by.... should be able to see exactly where the spot is that you are aiming for EVERY...single....time .
Do 3 to 5 sets of 100... five feet from the wall ....then side step two feet and repeat. Then step back and repeat.Complete 300 to 500 passing repetitions
You’re welcome!
Jaylen and Kenny did that…

When you do setting volleyball drills at home by yourself or in practice with your teammates, try to get in the habit of setting mini goals for yourself to reach in order to complete each drill.
This is how you can discipline yourself to perform the drills correctly, but you will create your own pressure, the same that happens in a game when you absolutely have to do the skill right.
Ready to turn that disciplined mindset into action?
Before we dive into these setting drills, make sure you understand proper setting technique (which I break down step-by-step in my article 'Setter in Volleyball: Building Your Foundation From the Ground Up').
What is setting in volleyball for the advanced players looking for drills to do to improve this skill. When you set the ball with one hand then have to raise your elbow and have to hit the ball with the same hand you're working on getting your hand to the ball quickly while reaching high and controlling the ball. Georgetown univ hitter Giselle works on her quick armswing.
Before we get into a high intensity pepper drill I like to do a series of setting warmup drills that focus on ball control and body control.
Since my coaching philosophy is about all my players being good at doing all six basic skills well, I like for all my players to review setting "sets" and be able to get reps in our warmup volleyball drills setting high balls, huts, Gos, side sets, back sets and be able to jump set all of these options.
When you go to the "next level" you need to be able to do everything so this is how we prepare to do "everything."
This is an advanced warmup setting volleyball drill where you dig a down ball with one hand and set immediately yourself a two ball then hit a controlled ball to your partner who digs it right back.
If you can't dig it with one hand you can dig it the classic way to yourself then set the two ball before hitting it.
When learning what is setting in volleyball, many players don't realize how important jump setting becomes.
This is one of the first we do in our series as we go from simple to more complex.
After setting high balls we go to huts and after standing huts we add a jump set.
