What 5 Things Does A Good Passer in Volleyball Do To Get The Ball To The Target

A good passer in volleyball faces the net, drops the inside shoulder, angles their platform, avoids turning to face the target, keeps shoulders facing the net.

A Good Passer in Volleyball Will Face The Net, Drop Their Inside Shoulder and Angle Their Platform Towards Their Intended Target

If you want to be a good passer on your volleyball team you're going to want to

1. keep your shoulders facing the net. What I mean by that is that your shoulders are parallel to the net like Kenny's are in the video above.

2. As the ball crosses the net you want to drop your inside shoulder, which if you're passing from zone 5 which is the left side of the court, you'd drop your right shoulder and if you're on the right side of the court, you'd drop or angle your left shoulder towards the center front of the court before you

3. angle your passing platform to the target, which is just right of Zone 3, where the setter is waiting to set the ball.

As the ball crosses the net you want to drop your inside shoulder, which if you're passing from zone 5 which is the left side of the court, you'd drop your right shoulder and if you're on the right side of the court, you'd drop or angle your left shoulder towards the center front of the court (Shots by Shanty)As the ball crosses the net you want to drop your inside shoulder, which if you're passing from zone 5 which is the left side of the court, you'd drop your right shoulder and if you're on the right side of the court, you'd drop or angle your left shoulder towards the center front of the court (Shots by Shanty)

Face your body to the net and angle your platform towards the target before contacting the ball.

  • This reduces the need to re-adjust your arms once making contact with the ball

Keep your eyes on the ball as it comes               across the net.

  • Taking your eyes off the ball as it travels over the middle of the court increases the chances of getting aced
  • You may also be unable to make minor adjustments to your feet to accurately pass the ball to your target.

Some of your passing problems happen when you're late to move to bump a volleyball because you watch or begin to track the ball only when its already on your side instead of earlier when the ball was in the server hands.

Focus on the ball in the opposing server’s hand, not on the server’s face.

  • It’s the ball you need to pass
  • Focus on it as soon as the server gets it in their hands to serve

A Good Passer in Volleyball Gets Their Belly Button Out Of The Way To Present Their Platform Outside of Their Body's Midline Before Passing The Ball

A good passer in volleyball watches as a ball coming over the net towards them decides early which side they will open up to ...getting their belly button out of the way, like you do when you play dodgeball, while creating their passing platform so they make contact with the ball when its outside of the body's midline.

Move your feet to position yourself close to the ball.

  • Get your body to the ball and then reach to the ball with your arms dropping your inside shoulder

A Good Passer in Volleyball Keeps Their Feet On The Ground

Pass with both feet on the volleyball court floor rather than doing the “jump- bump.”

  • You can make small adjustments with your feet on the ground better than you can do with your feet in the air

I know its cool nowadays to lift one foot off the ground to pass a ball but most high school kids who haven't done a ton of balance leg work (which is what I do regularly in my client and club trainings) are a lot more stronger and can maintain their balance with two feet on the ground as opposed to one foot.

Why increase your chances of shanking a ball by passing on one foot when you can pass the ball right to your target keeping both feet on the ground.
