Okay enough of the third person stuff. Lets get into it.

I designed a shirt to display my respect and admiration for a player position created for the dynamic dynamos in the backcourt, the libero player in volleyball,  as a t-shirt design that displays the words that I think the libero embodies:

So, what is the significance of the words I used?

The libero player in volleyball plays a unique and specialized role as a defensive specialist on the team.

Known for their exceptional passing, digging, and defensive skills, the libero is instrumental in maintaining the team's defensive integrity and transitioning into successful offensive plays.

In my insightful article "Libero Volleyball Player Responsibilities, Roles, Qualities and Rules,” I explain that the libero occupies a crucial role in serve receive and in defense, often being asked to take over larger areas of the court, which increases their responsibility when passing and digging the ball.

The libero player in volleyball is a key defensive specialist, providing stability and organization to the team's defense.

The goal of the libero is to be really good at these three of the six basic skills -

• passing 
• digging
• serving

They are responsible for receiving and passing serves with precision, ensuring that their teammates can effectively set up offensive plays.

Additionally, the libero player in volleyball plays an important role in digging and defending hard-hit attacks from the opposing team, while showcasing their fast feet, exceptional reflexes and defensive capabilities.

Beyond their defensive contributions, the libero player also possesses the ability to control the backcourt, acting as the quarterback of the team's defense.

They constantly read the court, making split-second decisions on positioning and movement to ensure that they are in the best position to receive and defend against the opponent's attacks.

By maintaining strong communication with their teammates, the libero player helps to coordinate the team's defensive strategy, calling out plays and providing feedback on positioning.

The libero player serves as a leader and communicator on the court, helping the setter to empower their teammates and instill confidence in their abilities.

Their effective communication helps to maintain a cohesive defensive unit, preventing gaps in back court coverage and ensuring that the team can easily transition from defense to offense.

Their leadership qualities can extend beyond the court as well, as they often act as a role model for their teammates, displaying discipline, determination, and a relentless work ethic.

With their defensive contributions, ability to control the backcourt, and their role as a leader and communicator, the libero player must 

• have a high level of mental focus
• accept the heavy responsibility of being a backcourt leader
• become accustomed to the pressure of consistently delivering a ball to the setter on the court

and is an indispensable asset to any volleyball team.

Acknowledging and appreciating the specific duties they fulfill is essential in recognizing the immense value they bring to the game.

This level of commitment is what sets them apart and defines their libero life.

I've made alot of  "libero life" volleyball tshirt designs for my Volleybragswag collection and that's because I believe being a libero is actually a lifestyle.

To be a successful libero player you have to be obsessed with becoming the best on your team to perform three skills

• passing
• digging
• serving

To excel at these three of the six basic skills takes

• alot of time
• alot of hard work
• alot of repetitions
• alot of focus
• alot of concentration
• alot of self talk
• alot of studying video

When the motivated libero player in volleyball embraces the idea of being the best on her team in this position they have to focus on the above elements in some shape or form whether emotionally, mentally, or physically....24 hours a day because these things take over one's life.

In most private trainings or team volleyball practices for liberos, the focus is on perfecting each of the three skills passing, digging and serving so that in a game when the ball absolutely positively needs to be a perfect pass , or a tough serve, or a playable dig...in those high pressured moments, the libero has to be so confident, so ready, so focused to make THAT pass, THAT dig, THAT serve.

That takes

• a high level of mental focus
• the ability to accept the heavy responsibility 
• the willingness to become accustomed with and to be able to live with that pressure each time they step on the court. 

Through hours of dedicated practice, they work on their passing technique, training their arms and hands to precisely control the ball's trajectory.

Their digging skills are developed through repetitive drills, enhancing their reflexes and agility to quickly react to hard-driven attacks.

Additionally, their serving skills are refined through consistent training, working on their ball placement, speed, and spin to put their opponents under pressure.

These training sessions require discipline and a strong work ethic.

Libero players diligently work on their footwork, body positioning, and reading the game, aiming to anticipate their opponent's moves and make precise defensive plays.

They put in countless hours of repetition, focusing on the smallest details and constantly striving for improvement.

The mental aspect of a libero player's training is just as crucial as the physical.

They must develop mental resilience to handle the pressure of being the last line of defense.

Focus, concentration, and quick decision-making skills are honed through intense drills and simulated game situations.

By preparing both physically and mentally, libero players are equipped to handle the demands of their role on the volleyball court.

That ability to take on this responsibility ..takes over your life.

Your libero life. 

It becomes your lifestyle.

Its

• what you talk about with other liberos
• what you think about at lunch with teammates
• what you dream about when you wake up in the middle of the night sitting up in bed while your arms move to pass a ball in your sleep. (Trust me this is real, your brain keeps practicing and going over what happened in practice that day and the week before while you sleep)  

while learning how to think like a libero, focus like a libero and to lead your team from the backcourt. 

The ‘LIFE’ of a libero is not just about the player's undeniable importance to their team, it's about the dynamic spirit and the inherent selflessness they breathe into the fighting spirit of their team because of the responsibilities they're required to possess in every match.

Man I said that!! Applause please!!

A successful libero is a fireball of controlled action and anticipation, constantly moving, consistently leading by example and forever communicating with teammates.

Their relentless hustle and fearless athleticism and agility on the court contribute so much life to the excitement of the game.

Through their unwavering dedication to training and practice, libero players are able to elevate their skills to the highest level.

The combination of physical prowess and mental fortitude allows them to excel in their position and contribute significantly to the team's success.

The libero's relentless pursuit of skill refinement and mental preparedness is essential in consistently delivering exceptional performances on the volleyball court.

To summarize...

Specific Roles and Responsibilities:

The libero player in volleyball takes on a multitude of crucial roles and responsibilities on the court.

Their primary focus lies in excelling in serve receive, a task that involves effectively passing the opponent's serve to set up the team's offensive play.

Additionally, liberos are tasked with maintaining defensive positions, covering the middle-back area of the court to ensure proper court coverage and readiness to defend against various attacking options from the opposing team.

Their ability to read the game, anticipate plays, and adjust positioning accordingly makes them the backbone of the backcourt defense. Furthermore, liberos showcase their skills by making accurate digs, ensuring that the ball stays in play and setting up their teammates for successful attacks.

Their agility, speed, and defensive prowess are vital in keeping the ball off the ground and maintaining control over the game tempo.

By excelling in serve receive, maintaining defensive positions, and making precise digs, liberos prove to be invaluable assets to their team's defensive unit, contributing significantly to the overall success of the team.

‘The LIFE’ speaks to the undeniable importance of the libero to the game... ...while ‘The LOVE’ alludes to the passion liberos are required to bring to her team, ...two primary ingredients that're crucial when it comes to the making of 'The LEGEND'.

For me, the libero player in volleyball, is ‘The LADY’ — a true queen of the court, with a leadership role that's super important and is vital to

• the team's ability to score points
• its competitive performance and
• its ultimate success

When we speak of ‘The LADY,’ it's not just about the fact that the libero is a female.

It's more about the grace, the composure, and the fierceness the libero has to embody in a competitive environment.

When we speak of ‘The LADY,’ it's not just about the fact that the libero is a female. It's more about the grace, the composure, and the fierceness the libero has to embody in a competitive environment.

I included the word ‘lady’ on the shirt because for me it signifies the libero’s ability to gracefully 'dance' her way around the court...

...maintaining control of her body parts while controlling the ball...displaying an ability to elegantly maneuver herself on and off the court

.... while multi-tasking  (you know...like moms, working women and fierce females do everyday) within the limitations of the rules of the game... while fiercely competing and rallying their team to fight for every...single...point.

‘The LOVE’ I put on the shirt as a tribute to the impassioned relationship liberos share with volleyball.

They are the sport's romantics, their love for doing the unsung 'dirty work' is tatooed in the sweat-drenched fight for each point, and in the ecstatic joy of a well-played hard fought..point.

Behind every fearless dive or with every lightning-fast upper body reaction is a profound love of the sport, that drives them to go, give and grind ...for every hard won point... making them truly the heart of their team.

Now THAT's true love. 

Finally, I used the term 'LEGEND' as a nod to the exceptional reputation a libero builds, while fearlessly serving their team selflessly point after point, set after set, match after match, tournament after tournament. 

The libero volleyball position, itself, is extraordinarily special. The term 'libero', derived from the Italian language, means "free," which I like to interpret as reflecting the liberated spirit of these players.

Unlike their teammates, liberos

• have the freedom to enter or exit the game at will, and
• put on a uniquely different jersey color

These specialized soldiers on the court bring strategic depth and versatility to the team. Their role allows them to write their own rules, and paint their own path to create an unmatched legacy.

Through their relentless hustle and athleticism, liberos contribute life and excitement to the game.
