Minnesota and Nebraska earned No. 2 seeds in their quadrants, while Ohio State was a No. 3 seed and Penn State a No. 4 seed.
The Big Ten Conference remains a consistent presence in the NCAA Tournament, having now sent at least six member schools to the event in 24 of the past 25 seasons, dating back to 1998.
With Sunday’s announcement, Penn State has now been chosen for all 42 NCAA tournaments since the event debuted in 1981. The Nittany Lions remain the only program that has competed in every NCAA volleyball tournament to date.
Minnesota (20-8, 15-5) earned its 27th bid to the NCAA Tournament and 22nd in the last 23 years. The Golden Gophers have six Final Fours to their credit, most recently in 2019, and will begin their quest for another trip to college volleyball’s biggest stage by hosting a subregional at Maturi Pavilion this weekend. Minnesota, which tied for third in the Big Ten this season, will take on Southeastern Louisiana at 8 p.m. (ET) Friday, following the other first-round match in Minneapolis between No. 7 seed Florida State and Northern Iowa. The winners return for a second-round contest at 8 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
Nebraska (24-5, 16-4) is a five-time national champion and will be competing in the NCAA Tournament for the 41st time, appearing in every tournament except the inaugural event in 1981. The Huskers, who have reached the Final Four 16 times and were the Big Ten runner-up this year, led the nation in attendance once again this season and will open at home at 8 p.m. (ET) Thursday in the Bob Devaney Sports Center with a first-round match against Delaware State, while seventh-seeded Miami (Fla.) and Kansas meet in the other first-round contest in Lincoln before the winners match up in a second-round encounter at 8 p.m. (ET) Friday.
Ohio State (19-9, 15-5) tied for third in the Big Ten standings for the second consecutive season and were in contention for the Big Ten title entering the final weekend of the regular season. The Buckeyes subsequently earned their 27th NCAA Tournament berth and, for the second year in a row, will play host to the opening two rounds at the Covelli Center in Columbus. OSU, which has advanced to the Final Four twice (1991 and 1994) will entertain Tennessee State in the first round at 7:30 p.m. (ET) Friday, with the winner of the match between No. 6 seed USC and High Point waiting in the second round at 6 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
Penn State (24-7, 13-7) is the true blueblood of the NCAA Tournament with its 42-year appearance streak continuing this weekend after a fifth-place finish in the Big Ten race this year. The Nittany Lions have won a Big Ten-best seven national championships and reached 13 Final Fours, most recently in 2017. They are also back on familiar ground, hosting first- and second-round matches at Rec Hall. PSU will start its latest postseason journey with a first-round match at 7:30 p.m. (ET) Friday against UMBC, while fifth-seeded UCF or Yale are waiting in the wings in round two at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
Purdue (20-10, 11-9) is appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the 24th time and the 17th in 19 seasons, having earned the No. 8 seed in its quadrant of the bracket. The Boilermakers have drawn Tennessee for their tournament opener at 4 p.m. (ET) Friday in Louisville, Ky., with subregional host and No. 1 seed Louisville welcoming Samford in that site’s other opening-round contest. The two winners will face off in a second-round match at 6 p.m. (ET) Saturday, also in Louisville.
Four-time reigning Big Ten Champion Wisconsin (25-3, 19-1) earned the Big Ten’s automatic qualification into this year’s NCAA Tournament. The Badgers are making their 26th NCAA Tournament appearance and 10th in a row, with four of their five Final Four appearances (as well as three national championship match berths and last year’s NCAA title) coming during this current 10-year run. Wisconsin will start this year’s tournament at 8 p.m. (ET) Friday when the Badgers play host to Quinnipiac, following the other first-round match at the UW Field House between TCU and No. 8 seed Washington. The two first-round winners will return at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday for a second-round contest.
