Lets learn more about the right side hitter volleyball position.
Watch my Vegas Volley 18s boys team in action with lots of right side hitter volleyball player points being scored!
I've listed some of the essential tactical abilities that a right side hitter should learn:
- Quick decision-making
- Play anticipation
- Strategic positioning
- Attack variation
- Block timing
- Defensive reading
- Transition planning
Volleyball Drills For Hitting: Gorman two-time Gatorade Player of the year and Cal Poly starting left side hitter volleyball player Tommi Stockham (a 3 year client) Works On Transitioning from Outside To Hit A Two Ball
Key parallels include:
- Superior vision and court awareness
- Silent but effective approach needed to move in a reduced area on the right side of the court as compared to the space the left side hitter needs to cover
- Quick adaptability also because the right side hitter gets set balls that're behind the setter so if the ball is too far inside or outside the antenna the opposite has to be ready with a game plan in mind to make a play out of the ball
- Precise timing for blocks they have to make against the opposing team's stronger hitters who attack on the other side of the net from the left side
- Powerful presence especially with coaches, especially college coaches who have decided to put their tallest players on the team as the right side hitter so they can present a bigger block against the opposing team's strong left side hitter
- Wise decision-making in fast moving situations which takes a talented right side hitter who can transition quickly from offense to defense in a reduced area on the court located behind the setter.
Watch Izzy set Piper on the right side during private training with me. Piper working on transitioning off the net fast and then accelerating the last two steps of her spike approach which propels her into the air while swinging high and fast to spike the ball.
Strategic elements include:
- Reading setter tendencies especially for sets meant for opposing hitters that run plays that will come in front of the right side zone that should be blocked
- Anticipating plays while staying light on their feet in case the they have to block jump two or three times in a row to cover
- Adapting attack angles which from Zone 2 requires the hitter to contact the ball so its aimed for sharper angles in the opposing team's court
- Smart shot selection so you have weapons in your offensive arsenal like the wipe, the tool, hitting high seam between the block, hitting sharp cross court so the ball lands inside the ten foot line or deep cross court in the far corner or deep line in the opposing court
- Block positioning especially for balls that aren't set to the opposing middle blocker or the opposing left side but are purposefully set between these two zones to make it difficult for the defending team to block
- Defensive awareness which is necessary if the right side hitter needs to help the middle blocker block the 3 set, the 32 or the Red set that's delivered to the right side antenna
- Team communication which reinforces how fast and how high the back set you're about to get from your setter
Vision applications:
- Scanning opponent positions
- Identifying defensive gaps
- Reading block formations
- Tracking setter location
- Monitoring serve patterns
- Analyzing defensive shifts
- Spotting offensive opportunities
Smart hitting strategies that the right side hitter uses:
- Varied attack timing
- Shot distribution
- Tooling the block
- Off-speed attacks
- Line/angle selection
Mental characteristics that an opposite hitter needs to have to be successful:
- Calm under pressure which comes with practicing consistent transition footwork so from your ready blocking position you learn to take the least amount of steps to get to the adjusted position near the ten foot line in offense
- Strategic thinking: Practice varied approaches so that you can hit the ball set to you close to the antenna or offensive plays that require left side hitters to hit balls that are in front of and closer to the setter
- Quick adaptability so in practice you work on developing weapons in your offensive 'toolbox' like the wipe, the tool, hitting high seam between the block,
- Decision confidence - study opponent tendencies and remember them so if a hitter in front of you keeps hitting line you can identify that tendency and adjust your blocking strategy so you block their line before your coach has to call a timeout to tell you to do so for example
- Emotional control so that as a right side hitter you feel prepared to make emergency plays which prepare you to have a plan when the setter is forced to run an "out of system" play
Check out some of the aspects that a right side hitter should have:
- Block communication which is important when the right side hitter works together with their middle blocker to time their blocking footwork together when moving across the net to block an opposing hitter
- Play calling which happens at the start of each play and depends on whether the right side hitter is telling their setter what set she wants to get or whether the setter calls the plays in offense.
- Tactical adjustments include taking note when the opposing left side hitter or middle have made points hitting to a specific zone so now the right side hitter need to identify where opponents have scored points so they can make changes with their blocking strategy
Defensive tactics:
- Strategic positioning by adjusting to the set location on the opposing side once you agree with your middle blocker what sets are their responsibility and what is yours as the right side hitter
- Block timing - the right side hitter develops block timing patterns so you know the steps and speed needed to take different block jumps depending on the speed and height of the set on the opposing side
- Attack anticipation establish hitting preferences with your setter who gets used to what and how you like to hit a ball whether its a faster paced set or a higher set
The right side hitter works to create a balance between power and finesse which helps them to be unpredictable by
- Strategic placement means looking and remembering to see what spaces are open around the opposing team's block especially if one spot was initially open and then you need to change when the opposing team starts digging balls in that spot
- Situation reading which requires quick decision-making ability needed to decide quickly while in the air if you see blocking hands stopping you down the line to decide quickly to go cross court
- Competitive focus which requires a an aggressive attentiveness for long periods of time without allowing yourself to step on an emotional roller coaster throughout the game.
- Court awareness needed to quickly identify open spaces to hit to on the opposing team's court
